I used my 3rd party updater
https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=160053

also, when I started up 2.50, it took 20 + minutes for DCS to start and fill the cache, and be able to even see or get in a plane...

my 2.5 was running slow on loading,, so I adjusted some graphics and it is much better now  ;)  ... my weapons were not releasing properly on a few aircraft after the patch. I have to check all of the commands, keys.

20 Gigs for me ....let it go over night and I'm only at 19% at 6 AM ......with my 3rd world download speeds I'll probably have to leave it download all day and night today .....so no BoX tonight ......

All downloaded, looks pretty damn good.  Flew a quick mission on the Caucasus map with Medium and Low settings (same settings I have been using in Alpha) and pegged it at 60 FPS (VSYNC on) with only a couple of small dips into the high 40's.  There were a couple of pauses but the Beta is on my regular HDD not my SDD so I think that is where they came from.   Still looks a bit washed out with deferred shading on but it was also the Fall map, so there was not a lot of contrast in the colors.   I think with the game on the SDD and some visual tweaking it is going to look awesome.

I got done last night.  I loaded a MP map and just viewed things with the F2, F7, and F9 views.  I have deferred shading off and everything else is set to around medium.  Things look nice but not as nice as what that promo video was (what they heck are they running that on, a supercomputer??).  The one thing I have noticed is the loading.  Takes forever using a standard hard drive.  Takes 2 minutes + just to spawn into a cockpit.  Loading the MP map took probably 5min +  I may have to think about picking up a SSD and reinstalling onto that once they are done upgrading the release version.  FYI you DO still have your Saved Games folder from DCS Alpha left over after you update the Beta so if you made missions in Alpha you should still have them.  I noticed around a 20 GB increase in available free space on my hard drive once the update was done.

Wags mentioned in one of his F-18 videos that he was running everything Maxed out and that it would require a very strong computer to get those kinds of visuals.   To be honest when Nevada (Alpha) first came out I was able to run it on everything on High and it ran really well, I had to tone tings down since defferred shading and a couple of the other graphics enhancements were added.  That said there were know issues with the graphic enhancements in alpha just before 2.5 and I think some of them should have been resolved but I will have to fly Nevada to see if they were fixed and be able to compare with what I was seeing before.

I have always found that after an update the first time I load a mission it takes a long time, I think it is rebuilding shader caches or something like that.

Top, you dont have to reinstall the game if you get a new SSD, you can copy the folder and put it in a new location and use the windows command prompt to link the two locations in the registry.  I just picked up a new SDD (Samsung 850 Pro 256GB for $109 at New Egg) and I am going to use the copy method I am talking about and I will let you know how well it works.

Guys, I will not be able to get on until after 9:00 MST.  I know Jstek wants to test his mission which sounds fun to me.

I am also having issues with 2.5 and multiplayer, at least with the large MP servers.  I am maxing out my RAM (actually my Commit Charge) and it is crashing my game.  This was a problem I was seeing in 2.0 Alpha, but only with the Mig 21.  I think there is a couple of issues (BUGS) going on.  First off for some reason when I join Blue flag or the 104th, the server puts on about 4 GB of more stuff into my RAM, for example flying offline quick mission I am using about 9 GB of RAM, but on Blue Flag or the 104th that jumps to 13 GB, I seriously doubt that those mission file are 4 GB, not to mention if the mission files were really 4 GB they would take a couple of hours to DL..  Secondly there is an issue with the Reserved Memory, When I am flying offline as I mentioned My RAM usage is about 9 GB with about 4 GB Reserved and 3 GB Free, it seems that when the game fails to load all the way in MP (which happens a lot) it keeps a lot more in the reserve, so it jumps up to 7 GB leaving no free RAM, I need to test a little more and see where the RAM Used/Reserved/Free lands when a MP server loads first time, but I am betting that the Reserved and Used are lower, at least at first.  Now my system setting are exasperating the issue, I have my page file off (always have) so there is no Virtual memory for my system to fall back on, so when the Used RAM and Reserved RAM is at 16 GB the Commit Charge is 100% without virtual memory to use and the game crashes.   I Changed the Page file and opened up 8 GB on my new drive and I flew a mission on the 104th and didn’t get to 100% Commit Charge so it worked, but I am hoping they get this Bug sorted out and I can go back to 100% RAM with no page file.

Thanks for all the info.  I’ve upgraded my OB to 2.5, flew a quick mission and was getting good performance with my medium-high settings.  The RAM usage is higher than before even offline.  I can’t run one of my big missions in 2.5 that I flew in 1.5.8 - it loads up around 60% and freezes.  I notice at that time that my 16GB of ram is 99% utilized, so DCS is using a lot more memory than before, not even including MP code.

OK, so what are the pros and cons of using a page file/virtual memory.

I have alway used one   and dont think i have taken a hit.

The above does make me glad that I got 32 GM of RAM.

Long and short of it  if you have it enabled, "it automatically places some memory usage onto the HDD. HDD access READ / WRITE is much slower than accessing the RAM.
Then, as you're installing and removing files, it fragments them as the Paging File changes size -unless you have set the max and min to the same value." I'm not sure that with todays cpu speeds and SSD if it would be that much of a problem.

Title: Re: DCS World 2.5 Changelog and Updates

If you turn your paging file off everything is run thru the RAM and the computer does not use your HDD/SDD at all for quick access RAM, that said you need enough RAM to make that happen.  You will see some "lag" from page file use especially from a HDD. Even an SSD will have a little lag associated with it since it is not directly on the BUS but has the data going thru the SATA controller, but in many cases you probably would not notice it.  Since you have 32 GB of Ram I would say there is little to no use of your Page file since you have more than enough to load everything into RAM.

Another reason why folks turned off the page file was that back when SSD's first came out folkes did not want the page file to write to the SDD contantly and wear it out.  This really is not a concern any more.

I have always had mine turned off on my gaming rig, and it runs stuff really well, up to 2.5.  I am 99% sure they have a bug in their system that is loading a lot more into RAM than is necessary.

On a side Note, my VRAM has been maxed out as well, all 4 GB of it..

MattE
I have an 1080 as well
I flew all over the new map through towns and the mountains and using MSI afterburner and it looks like on usage I'm maxing a little over 5 gigs on vram  and a little over 9 gigs on system ram ....I'm going to run it some more to make sure its accurate

On the pagefile issue  I've noticed when I turn it off, I sometimes get more stuttering in games. (16GB ram here) I've read turning off swap forces Windows to be super inefficient with RAM. Might try putting pagefile back on and see how it runs. I moved mine to the Sata HDD and made it 8Gigs .....so far so good we'll see.

With 32 gigs it probably wont matter but I would at least set a page file min setting on the ssd .... JMHO

Sorry guys, I'm officially done with DCS for the immediate future.  Since 1.58x is no longer going to be supported, and there's still a lot of WIP with many of the aircraft, I'm not sure I want to continue flying that version.

2.5 is an abomination, IMO - it's totally unplayable for me, forget multiplayer, I can't even get it to run offline, unless I have a minimal type mission.  Whatever they've done, they've totally screwed the pooch on 2.5 - memory leaks to start.  Until they've acknowledged that there are problems (and then address them, of course), I will no longer even attempt to fire up DCS.  I'm beyond pissed... I know my machine needs an upgrade (I'm planning on building another gaming PC, but I'm not close to starting work on that yet), but it was definitely playable in 1.5.8.x, and other sims work great.   Just DCS is hosed.

I'll be focusing on BoX for the indefinite future, as well as supporting IL2/46 campaigns, etc., maybe I'll have time for CloD now that DCS is dead to me.

Well that sucks Rel .....I changed my 1.5 stable to beta so no going back for me ..lets hope for quick patches....

I found this on the forum this morning and I can second it and none of it was even in multiplayer

Quote from: Rainbowgeorge;3378486
Alright, i have tried out something and now i can join.
I have increased my pagefile on my secondary drive to 32 (!!!!!!!) Gigabytes.
When i load into MP it uses all of my real RAM (16GB) PLUS another 16 GB of that simulated RAM
I can play now but this ammount of memory usage is way too much.....

I noticed my pagefile went up to 11GB during play......I moved it to my a second hdd and set it to 8GBlate last night but didn't get to run DCS on that setting.... I'm going back to set it to managed by windows and see if moving all that writing to a different drive than the game helps smooth it out   ....

Definetly an issue

I agree there is a serious memory issue.  I turned on my Page file and made it 8GB and it is working, but even offline I get an occasional large stutter (FPS down to single digits) and the reserve memory is around 7 GB leaving 0 Free memory.  I know some of the MP server admins have had issues as well and ED has said they are aware of the issue, That said this is not a new issue, I think it has been there for a couple of patches it just seems to have gotten worse.  It seems like if you have 32 GB of RAM, a fast internet connection and a 1080 card or over 5 GB of VRAM you dont notice anything, however those are twice the recommended specs...

Rel, How much RAM do you have, Is you hard drive an SSD, and how much VRAM do you have?

I have 16GB of RAM, a GTX970 with 4GB of VRAM, i5 2500k @3.2GHz and my OB is on a HDD, but release is on an SSD.

I just need a break from the waiting.  I have patience, but I’m tired of wasting my time looking at the letters DCS or loading a mission  and twiddling my thumbs.  Time for a break until they patch it up.

I haven't had an issue yet with 2.5 in single player, i have been activly loading my mission several times and load times are fine.

I do have a 1080 video card, computer ram at 12 gb, and 2 ssd drives, I have the page file going to one of the SSD drives.
You always need a windows page file, its there for when you run out of memory and it will page to disk. Better that than have hard memory faults.
Using SSD for that makes it much faster.

I will say I have not tried any multiplayer servers yet.  Been doubling down on my mission creation.  Btw, post feedback since yah are stuck in limbo! :)

I have only tried the Huey in Blue Flag, Jsetk, and single player.  In all three my load tomes were well under 2 minutes.  It did take the chopper 15 seconds or so for the graphics to generate.

I know that my new computer is probably towards the top end, and I know Sully has a new machine as well.  I have 32 GB RAM but Sully has 16, we both have newer CPUs and SSDs, and both have 1080 GTX.  Just listing to see what specs may matter.  Frankley, i dont think SSDs would make the difference that others are seiing.

I did go into the single player Huey mission entitled easy attack, in VR.  Frame rates seemed to be down 10%, from 45 fps to 41 fps.  The season was autumn and the targets wete near a stand of trees, some evergreens and some with color. Simply put, flying through the trees, trying NOT to hit them was simply BEAUTIFUL.  As a test, I decided to fly through the trees until I found a small opening, and land.  This was to simulate a hot LZ.  It was such a rush!  I think this will add a lot for us helicopter jockeys.

I agree Clutter ......SSD probably only matters to load times.....moving forward probably would be best to have a card with 6-8GB of vram and at min. 16GB of system ram.....

I have most things maxed with msaa off/shadows flat

This game looks awesome now...the runways the trees /landscape....I'm definitely putting more stick time in...I need Huey hot zone landing practice for sure ;).....

offline it looks good,,, online, multiplayer, had big problems connecting, so could not really test much. Until they fix the online playing bugs... I can see how the SSDD would help a whole lot. But, a regular decent hard drive will do, one they get the bugs out... IMHO

The Video Card should have at least 3 gb ram. 16 gb of good quality motherboard ram.
this should be good for medium settings...

of course no one one knows for sure until they debug the open beta... fix the really bad memory leak!    :o

I think an SSD will be important if the page file becomes necessary for folks who have 16 GB of RAM or less (for folks who have 8 GB the page file probably will be a must). I hope that the memory issue they have can be fixed to the point where 16 GB (the recommended amount of RAM) is enough to turn off my page file again.  IMO if you use a page file your best bet is to have your page file on a SSD, even better would be an SSD that does not have your OS on it.  SSD’s are considerably faster than a HDD, and since the page file is in “virtual” RAM you want something that is fast as possible.

FYI I am traveling for business, so I am not flying this week.

Once you get that puppy installed, you can also configure the SSD to help cache windows files and ect from your older HD, thus making your system run even faster.
