Ok after having to put the update on a different drive since my SSD that DCS is on does not have 42gb Free, I got the whole thing installed and the space on my DCS drive did not change, so there is a whole lot of file swapping going on.

ummmm....   42GB.  WOW.

Now I dont think (though I dont know since it is going to take some time to DL) it will just add 42GB to the install, it is still a HUGE update

what a dumba$$, the second he heard F 22 he should have said I want nothing to do with that... he is being held about an hour from my house, I didn't see anything from our local news.

When it comes to DCS I am still about jets. I will buy the A-8 to support ED since I feel they did me right after the kickstarter thing with Luthier went south (which is what got me into DCS and their Jets, to begin with) but I don't plan on flying much DCS WWII until they release the P-47 and finish the new damage model and even then it will be in small amounts.  BOX has WWII well covered and has considerably more content, that said it is good that 777 has some competition, keeps them honest.

I agree Ram, all these planes makes it hard to master one thing, I have restricted myself (for the most part) to flying the F-18 and the A-10 and helios when needed along with the occasional F5/Mig 21 sortie.  I could be wrong but I think the modern stuff is where everyone wants to be right now.

What Clutter said, I bought the Mig 19 with the Bonus points the rest were on sale so I could not use Bonus points on them.

Get the Harrier.  F-5 is fun but the Harrier is COOL!

DCS Series Flight Sims / To curve or not to curve.

Well I looked at the track from Saturday night and I snapped my F-14’s wings off.  Unfortunately because of how fast it happened Tacview did not record the G-force value, but it is clear in the Tacview that I pitched hard to avoid the missile for a split second.  I had pulled over 9G’s in the fight before pulling my wings off, so I am wondering if there is a cumulative effect.  I did the same thing on Sunday in BF (at least I think, there as so much desync in the server I am not 100% sure).  But the biggest eye opener was when I didn’t rip my wings off, but it is certainly worth mentioning so I am posting in here.   I was flying at low level in an F-14 in BF just North of Gudauta in that narrow plain between the ocean and the coastal range, I was flying at full military doing close to mach 1 and was in a steady left turn moving to a north heading (towards Sochi).  That Coastal range has a steep rise to it, and I was a bit too close so I increased the backpressure to the stick and my smooth 5-6G turn shot up to close to 10Gs in a split second.  It was so unexpected I thought I had been hit by something or I had a mechanical issue of some sort, but when I released my backpressure there were no issues.  I have curves both for pitch and roll, at the time the pitch curve was set to 15 (which is not a lot) and I have now increased it to 20.. but I am starting to wonder if a curve is a good idea at all.  For those of you who fly RC aircraft you will know this set up as exponent or exponential curves, I set it on my elevators for all my sailplanes.  In case someone does not know what it does or the real “catch” that I think is messing with the F-14, a curve or exponent curve softens the reaction of the stick around the center but it increases the sensitivity after mid travel range moving towards full travel. I think what is happening is that increase sensitivity after mid travel causes pitch angle (AOA) to increase too rapidly.  I am going to try some different setups on the elevator and report back.  I am going to try a shallow curve (less than 10), I am going to go back to the liner set up, and I will try a shallow reverse curve where there is a little more travel around the center but it will soften at the higher end of travel.  It is also possible this is an aerodynamic feature of the Tomcat, I have experienced something similar on sailplanes with full flying stabs, or it is a bug in the model, but I don’t think this is the case

Yeah Ram, she is getting flushed out and is becoming a real killer.  The F-18 has gone from being a dangerous plane for its team kills online to being a downright all purpose killer with the last couple of patches.

I watched a guy rack up 10 kills in about an hour on the BF Persian Gulf server in an F-18.  The Data Link and the best radar in the game gives it's pilots great SA.

I have been focused on the pilot seat so Far.  I have takeoffs and landings from airfields down and can land on a carrier but I need to work on the mechanics to be consistent.  I have A2A down as well, and I have been flying online with success. 

Next step is to increase my key bindings, get the startup set up on my warthog and flush out my voice attack profile. Then on to either RIO school or work on my Nav skills.

That said last weeks patch killed my Tomcat, the second I am locked by another aircraft's radar my game crashes.  There is a fix in the works, hopefully it will be out on Wednesday.   I have not flow the Tomcat since the issue started.

I also have some concerns about the radar on the Tomcat.  I set up a quick mission last week to test my voice attack profile and the radar (via Jester) cannot pick up one of the contacts until it is 10 miles away no matter what I do.  The target is a TU 22 flying in the opposite direction at 40,000 feet (my Tomcat is at 20K).  The Radar should be able to pick this target up at LONG range.  I am not sure if it is a bug in the Radar or if the Jester Commands are too basic to set the radar up to see it.  I have all the Azimuth and elevation commands set up correctly so I am not sure the issue, but I think I am going to have to learn more about the RIO position and the more detailed workings of the Radar to see if the basic Jester AI interface just cant get Jester to set the Radar correctly.   I think that Human RIO's are going to be a big plus for the Tomcat even with the interface.  I will put the mission in the drop box for you all to check out.

DCS Series Flight Sims / First online Tomcat kills

So I got my first online kills with the Tomcat last night.  I was flying on the BF Persian Gulf Map, flying the Tomcat against F-18’s and F-15’s and I downed 3 F-18’s all with the AIM-54.  I felt kind of guilty, since Jester is doing a lot of the work, just point the Tomcat at the enemy and wait for Jester to designate the target and let the Phoenix go.  I would say that I didn’t guide any of the shots for more than 10 seconds then broke away and let the Phoenix do its thing.   Unfortunately with how buggy the game is I have not been able to run my track and pull a Tacview to see if the Phoenix did a good job of running down these guys or if they didn’t maneuver.  One guy I am pretty sure was being defensive as it seem to take over a minute to hit him.

I also had a lot of Aim 120B’s shot at me and the Tomcats Speed was really apparent as I was able to reverse and burn away from the missiles each time (they were fired at range)

With this said, I think where the Tomcat will really shine is with a human RIO, Jester is slow on the callouts and with the stick partially blocking the view of the radar/tactical display up front having a Human work the RIO position I think will be significant improvement in lethality for the Tomcat.

All in all not bad, but I do have some reservations about the Tomcats Radar, something I will post in another thread.

Nice Find SD.

I installed the free version of Voice attack last night, I have been thinking Voice attack would be the way to go before the module came out.  I only set up a couple of commands to test it out but I am please with with how it is working.  The first command was to SST lock a target, I am setting it a little different than Bailey, I am not walking thru the steps, I am setting it up so the whole action is executed in one command, so for example "Lock Target" hits keys "A" "LCTRL 2" "LCTRL 2" and Jester locks the target.  The Jester wheel flashes briefly but really it only takes a second or less.  I think this is going to be very useful with scanning the various areas of the sky.  One of the things I noticed flying the F-14 on BF was that it was a lot time and effort to move the radar scan around do I was looking at everything around me, this should make that process much easier and faster. while not having the view blocked by Jesters wheel nearly as much.  Once I have the profile flushed out I will share.
