DCS Series Flight Sims / Getting into DCS, PC part idea's?
« on: November 25, 2018, 01:57:07 pm »
S! Wardogs,

I'm finally doing it. I'm dipping into the DCS waters. I figure it was a perfect time for it with the community made mod of the A-4E. Unfortunately my PC is going to be a big factor in terms of performance. I'm using 7 generation old equipment that's pushing almost 10 years old now minus my video card (1060 6gb).

I do however have an SSD (which I'm told helps a lot in DCS) but when I set it up, I made it the slave hard drive with my primary being the old mechanical HD's so I dont get a lot of performance benefits from having the SSD. I'm told its best to have the SSD has your primary in order to take advantage of the speeds. Anyway, my plan once I receive some inheritance money is to just go all out with a PC. Buy and build one thats going to last another 10 years. Any recommendations for CPU's and Mobo's gentlemen? Looking for Idea's for a solid system setup that will have me good to go for years to come. Money is not an issue (can't believe I'm saying that for the first time in my life lol) but I don't want to go to crazy (like $5,000 for a PC). I prefer to keep it under $3,000 if possible.

Thanks for the help gentlemen. DCS is the next logical step for me as I'm not totally satisfied with BoX or 1946 anymore. Looking for something much more complicated as I'm currently in flight school as it is.

Yeah these things happen on occasion. Just enjoy it while it lasts. Last time this happened to me I got speeds of 225-250/mpbs. It was insane. I was downloading entire games in under a minute. Sadly it did not last more than a week. =[

Glad to have you around man. Its been a long time since you and I were in the same skies in 1946. Looking forward to having you in the air watching our back. I too am on allied side currently for our 1946 campaigns.

This was the most satisfying thing I've read all day. Nvidia is one of those shitty corporation companies unfortunately. They will purposely go after a specific high end game developer (lets say Bethesda or 1c for example) then create some proprietary texturing system or rendering process that is native only to Nvidia. Guess what happens? Literally shuts out all the AMD GPU card holders and send everyone at AMD scrambling to find a work around. Nvidia has been doing these kinds of practices for years. All the way back to the original Crysis days.

I understand thats business in a sense, but those kinds of practices are just flat out wrong in my personal opinion. However because I'm very aware of these practices is the very reason why I continue to purchase Nvidia products because I don't want to run into these said issue's with the games I choose to play.

But I must say, man it feels good to see Nvidia hurt especially with this insane demand for GPU's with bitcoin miners (thank God that bubble has finally burst)

This part of the article in particular made me smile more than any other:
"They [Nvidia] made a serious misjudgment about the level of demand for their product (cough cough, Nvidia was relying on bitcoin miners to continue to buy). And for that, Nvidia's in the penalty box for a very long time".

It will be nice to see some price drops. May just look into a 1080Ti in the near future in 2019. I'm so glad the bitcoin mining bubble burst. It was driving prices of PC parts up through the roof to the point where I was seriously considering retiring from PC's all together. This is a victory for the common man at the end of the day.

Windows 7 for the win gentlemen.. I for one will continue to use it until the terms of agreement is up on the end of microsoft. They have to provide a secure operating system (windows 7) until 2020 as per the End User License Agreement (EULA) signed by me and any other user that installed Windows 7 regardless of what Microsoft says.

I have no idea how you guys deal with the constant updates and problems caused there after.

Hope anyone who's having trouble is able to get it fixed. I honestly recommend turning windows updates off guys. I wouldn't worry about viruses and such (which is the only reason the updates are so frequent, at least that is what Microsoft says). You know the websites you visit, and you know which ones are safe for sure, you know which ones are questionable.  My personal belief is they are downloading a bunch of information about you each time to they're own personal servers. But thats just my theory.

Can confirm this works in HSFX 7. But its not done the same way you normally activate mods.

Step 1: Download F7F Tigercat
Step 2: Create a folder in your main IL-2 HSFX and name it MODS (Just as its spelt, all capital letters)
Step 3: Extract the contents of the F7F download to your desktop (Or where ever you feel like)
Step 4: Copy the folder F7F-3 Tigercat and place it in your MODS folder that you created in Step 2.
Step 5: Download DiffFM for HSFX 7 here:,38980.0.html
Step 6: Extract DiffFM to your main IL-2 HSFX directory and overwrite anything it asks you to.
Step 7: Open a file named air.ini (Here is an example of where mine is located) D:\IL2 HSFX\Files\com\maddox\il2\objects
Step 8: Scroll down until you see
F6F-5             air.F6F5 1                                    usa01 DESERT

Create a blank space and after it and add this:

F7F-3             air.F7F_3 1                                   usa01 SUMMER

So by the time your done it will look like this

F6F-5             air.F6F5 1                                    usa01 DESERT
F7F-3             air.F7F_3 1                                   usa01 SUMMER

Step 9: Save file and start your game and make sure its available.

Doing these steps is the only way I have been able to get it to work. If your not comfortable doing this get with me and I'll do it for you. Take care.

Thats quite the collection. Everytime I see a P-47 in person i'm in awe of the size. She was a big girl. Its nice they have the P38's gun configuration visible for visitors to see.

At the museum I volunteer at we have a working Link Trainer as well. On fly days we put kids in it and let them "simulate". The original simulator =]

Loved it. Thanks for sharing. It made me smile to hear he was trained near Charleston, South Carolina. Really good stuff here.

Absolute gold.
