DCS Series Flight Sims / Flight seat ?
« on: September 29, 2018, 03:32:37 pm »
I found this and am seriously considering it as long as the budget allows.

Has anyone else heard of it / considering it?

Sorry for posting so late.  I'm still dealing with a sick pet and had to do another emergency vet trip this evening.

It has been suggested that we do a sit down to better determine our direction.

I would definitely like to talk about that at some point in the very near future probably on a Monday or Thursday meeting.  I am thinking about Oct 4th @ 8:30pm EST so that gives a full week for this message to get out to everyone (since some of us don’t read the AKA forums).  If you know anyone who pops into DCS but does not check these forums please make them aware of this.

In the mean time these are some things you all need to think about prior to the coming meeting.

1.       What server are you wanting to do?
a.       Our own campaign missions?  (We tried one out on Saturday and after some tinkering we got it to work and it did rather well.  We could certainly expand on this IF we get enough consistent design support from AKA members).
b.       Blue Flag?  If so, which one?
c.       Through the Inferno?
d.       Other?

2.       Which side do you want to play on, Red or Blue?

3.       What aircraft currently comprise that side for that server?

4.       If you have to pick 2 roles which roles would they be?
a.       CAS - Close air support/ground attack (fixed wing)
b.       GA - Ground attack (helo)
c.       CAP – Combat air patrol / air superiority
d.       TRANS – Ground transport (utility helo)
e.       SEAD – Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (fixed wing)
f.        RECON – Aircraft that are able to call in support strikes, or are able to carry crates but not troops or controlling ground vehicles via Combined Arms (only on servers that support this role),  - (fixed wing, helo, ground vehicle)

5.       If you have to pick (at least) 2 aircraft available on that server that will fill at least 2 of the above roles, what will they be?

6.       Is Simple Radio (SRS) required for that server?

7.       Do you have Simple Radio set up and working on your system?

8.       If you do not currently have SRS on your system, are you willing to install it and try and get it working?

9.     Are you able to commit to at least 1 day a week for squadron activities?

10.   If so, what day(s) would work best for you?

The end objective here is we need to determine what we are flying on, what aircraft will be available, what aircraft you will specialize (i.e. get fluent) in, and therefore … what you need to practice on (systems, tasks, weapons, and tactics).  Lastly, once we know what everyone is flying, we need to pick some resident experts who are willing and able to make a commitment to hold trainings on those specific aircraft so everyone can get up to speed.

To answer the question before it gets asked.  I do NOT require anyone to do manual starts of aircraft during combat evenings every time you start.  If you want to use autostart, go for it.

HOWEVER.  I will say that I DO ask everyone to go through the manual start sequence of the aircraft that they are going to specialize in so that you are at least familiar with it and can do it if the need arises (i.e. the autostart sequence fails) so that you are not sitting useless on the ground for 30+ minutes trying to figure out what is wrong.  I think the rule going forward is … if you rely on the autostart … and you try the autostart twice and it fails both times, after that you need to start manually.  I have step by step startup videos for ALL non-FC3 aircraft (except the new Yak-52 module) on my YouTube channel here:

For the Mirage, you can skip the INS alignment sequence since most servers have the option selected that the INS does not require alignment.  For the L-39 you do not need to set up the ADF/RSBN channels.  With those exceptions in mind, any DCS aircraft can be manually cold started and gotten to a ready-to-taxi state in less than 8 minutes (most aircraft can take far less time than that).  Remember, we are usually on the beta version of DCS.  Things can and will break (modules in general, or particular systems/weapons on some modules, or automated sequences).  So you need to be prepared to work around problems as they arise.

If you have any other points we need to consider please list them so they can be addressed during the meeting.

DCS Series Flight Sims / Map coord types
« on: August 27, 2018, 09:03:21 pm »
As the TAW server pointed out tonight.  You have to be very careful when dealing with map coordinates.  We are dealing with 3 potential types in DCS, L/L in Deg Min Sec, L/L in Deg Min.Sec(in decinal form), and UTM.  The TAW server (at least for the A-10Cs) are working in L/L Deg Min.Sec so if you plug L/L coordinates in from the F10 map (which is in Deg Min Sec) you will not have the right coordinates.  Just something to keep your eyes on when you get into a new server.

For those who want a handy reference of the Blue Flag locations without having to pull up a web browser:

DCS Series Flight Sims / Blue Flag Status
« on: August 25, 2018, 10:02:29 pm »
After the majority of people left for the evening on Sat night the Red side closed the Blue's last remaining FARP.  One of the other red pilots was in a Mi-8 headed down there to take it and with 20 minutes left to go it looks like he just made it.

I managed to put up an Igla and a SA-6 around Sabuli so that should hopefully at least give the blues pause from coming back into the area for a little bit.

For all you A-10C drivers (or anyone else looking for more buttons).

DCS Series Flight Sims / Offline for a day or two
« on: August 20, 2018, 09:20:26 pm »
I got my 500GB SSD tonight.  Tues and Wed will be transferring DCS off my drives so I can transfer everything over to the new drive.  Will probably take at least 1 evening, maybe two.  Should be back for Thur.

DCS Series Flight Sims / Voice comms programs
« on: August 17, 2018, 05:49:58 pm »
I will try and reinstall my TS3 client before the next DCS night.

In the mean time.  If any of you have Discord, Teamspeak, SRS, or other voice comms servers that you wish to make available for AKA to use for DCS, please list them in this thread.

DCS Series Flight Sims / F/A-18C updates
« on: August 14, 2018, 05:50:44 am »
Lots of good stuff coming in the next patch.

Full AMRAAM implementation including visual-mode.
Flood mode for AIM-7 and probably Home on Jam and Loft.
More implementation of the RWR on EW page and porting the EW to the HUD.

And ... wait for it ...

It's .... about ... time.

DCS Series Flight Sims / Carrier landings
« on: August 11, 2018, 10:49:03 pm »
I don't know about anyone else but the carrier landings are really grinding me up.  Can do the pattern fine right up until that last turn.

So I took a break and decided to come at it from a different perspective.

Thus I started using the TILS system.  If you haven't tried this yet and have been having problems with landings, I suggest giving the TILS system a try.  I set the carrier to channel 18.  Come at it from 20 miles out and a few thousand feet and just concentrate on flying the ILS needles on the hud.  It looks like the glideslope descent rate is around 650-700 fpm.

Doing this a number of times will help you develop a picture of what a good setup for short final and landing looks like (as far as where the carrier is in your HUD, and your descent rate, etc).

Should be quite helpful for folks to give it a try.

DCS Series Flight Sims / Issue from Blue Flag last night
« on: August 10, 2018, 06:33:42 am »
So a number of you were having issues getting new aircraft started with the autostart sequence last night.

I'm not going to say "I told ya so" ... buuuut .........

As you have seen, the autostart sequence can and does fail sometimes.

So ... those of you who rely strictly on the autostart, are you finally ready to learn how to start the bird up manually?  :)

DCS Series Flight Sims / Mig-21 and SA-342 grounded!
« on: August 01, 2018, 09:36:19 am »
Evidently the latest patch for beta is disabling the cockpits for the Mig-21 and SA-342.  Anyone looking to train on those aircraft will want to switch to an alternate choice temporarily.
