I've updated mission #1 (AKA_C2_M1_v14.miz) and have uploaded it to drop box:

From the update log:

1/30/2016 - AKA_C2_M1_v14
- Added two M-2000C aircraft spawn points at Kolkhi airfield
- Changed the human controlled aircraft tail numbers to be unique
- Added a second Mi-28 helicopter to the flight that randomly spawns at mission start and patrols the front line area.

IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad / He-111 belly 20mm
« on: January 08, 2016, 04:19:08 pm »
Has anyone figured out how to use the belly 20mm that points forward?  When in the gondola gunner position pointing to the rear, I can look forward and see that the cannon is rigged to fire remotely, so I figure it's something the pilot controls.  I haven't figured out how to select and fire it - wondering if anyone else has.

IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad / Ju-87 and engine damage
« on: January 08, 2016, 12:27:58 pm »
I was doing some quick missions with the Stuka (expert mode) and I had a heck of a time keeping the engine from getting damaged.  I thought I was overheating it but didn't see any indications.  Just that after flying for about 10 minutes it would suddenly say engine one damaged... Seems like out of the blue.  My temps were around 100c so I thought maybe they don't have much overheating tolerance.  So I changed the prop pitch to around 85 and kept the engine throttle at around 65-70% so as not to push it.  Temps stayed below 100c and it lasted longer but I evwntually damaged the engine again.  Anyone else flying the Stuka? Have you been able to avoid getting engine damage, and if so can you share your engine/prop pitch settings?

I was perusing the IL2/BoS forum and noticed there was mention of a stats page - here it is: . You can then search for pilots (e.g. "aka_") after clicking on the "Overall Pilot Rankings" button in the middle of the page.

DCS Series Flight Sims / DCS - Dynamic Campaign Engine?
« on: January 01, 2016, 07:30:43 pm »
Looks like MBot is working on a dynamic campaign generator framework for DCS:

I think this is for single player campaigns from a quick browse of the thread, but still, something that DCS sorely needs.

IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad / La5
« on: January 01, 2016, 11:52:31 am »
Is it just me or is the La5 really sluggish in turn performance?  Using AI Macchi's as a baseline, I've created some single missions for some quick A2A practice against normal experience AI.  In the Yak1 I can fairly easily get a shooting solution in a right hand turn between 3/4 and 1.5 turns (horizontal circle) or so.  The Lagg3 is not quite as good a turner, but with a little more time and more lag pursuit turning I can get a shooting solution.  The La5 is the worst of the three IMO - the engine feels underpowered as I can't sustain a tight turn very long;  bleeds too much energy.  I end up having to break the circle and run to get separation.  With full power and judicious use of boost I can usually outdistance them and slowly climb and turn things around.  However, it's much more work to get into an advantageous position.

Anyone else have similar experiences?

Also, if anyone wants these missions I can make them available.  The Mission builder is very different from IL2/46 - it takes a lot more parts to make up a mission.  Just creating two Macchi's that have a waypoint and attack enemy planes (I.e. Me! :) )took about 5 different objects/triggers, but I'm finally figuring it out.

IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad / Cool model viewer app included in BoS
« on: December 31, 2015, 12:57:28 pm »
I was looking at the mission editor and was browsing the folders and noticed a "Viewer" - very cool, you can load every aircraft in BoS and BoM and all skins and view the aircraft models.  You can also play animations showing all of the various loadouts of the aircraft, surface controls moving, gear going up/down. shadows.  Very cool feature to examine the aircraft external models close up.

You can find it here in the folder structure:  ...\1C Game Studios\IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Stalingrad\bin\viewer

IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad / First Online Impressions
« on: December 30, 2015, 09:19:08 am »
Flew online last night with Scorp, Wiley, Jer and Hang.  OK, wow, so far I like it!  I've been playing the single player campaign in quick mode which starts you in the air mostly.  So I got more exposure to takeoffs and landings.  You definitely have to go easy on the throttle and rudder movement with a good amount of braking.  The planes bounce a little too much but overall you get a better sense of taxiing a heavy object than what you get in IL2/46.  The takeoffs require a bit more focus and concentration but if you take advantage of the tail wheel lock and some initial rudder with minor corrections it's not too bad.

In the air the planes have a different, heavier feel to them - but it seems more realistic.  You can't jerk the planes around quickly like you can in IL2/46.  It takes a little more time for the ailerons, rudder and elevators to bite into the wind so it also seems more realistic.  Even with nose up trim gunnery is more difficult.  You have to anticipate a little more and time your shots because making constant adjustments can throw off your aim.  However I got my first online kill (a Stuka) and assist (Bf109G2) so I feel blooded now :).

All in all its a positive step in the right direction from IL2/46 - I think those who have been flying mostly IL2/46 will be pleasantly surprised by IL2/Battle of Stalingrad (BoS).  And if Scorp indeed comes through with a multiplayer campaign generator and server controller like he did for IL2/46, I can definitely see this as the next AKA and friends campaigns of the future.

The key bindings are a little more in depth than IL2/46, but not quite as deep as CoD and not nearly as deep as DCS.  The start up procedure is fairly quick, similar to CoD, and your rolling down the taxiway in mere seconds.

I give BoS a big thumbs up!  As has been mentioned, there's currently a half priced sale going on at so for any of those flying mainly IL2/46 I highly recommend the upgrade if you're on the fence.  It's $39.99 (for the premium package, which most/all of us who own it have, includes the La5 and Fw190) - regular price is $79.99 - the sale ends after this Sunday.

Don't mean to push, but I'd hate to see guys put it off then feel hamstrung as they watch others migrate to this next step and not be able to take advantage of the better price - timing is everything :).  So please, ask questions if you're on the fence.  We can try to clarify anything that may be keeping you back and help make the decision easier.

In summary it was great to fly with Wiley and Scorp again, and it would be great to see more of us together on the same sim on the same side "taking over" a side flying in an online server - just like old times.  I know that can also happen with CoD, but BoS has more to offer with for guys who like the ground attack aspect that CoD doesn't offer as much.

IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad / Minor tip when creating your BoS user name
« on: December 29, 2015, 11:13:16 am »
Just a small detail, but if you decide to purchase BoS you will need to create an account based on an email address.  You will also need to provide a user name and optionally a squad tag.

Looking at the current list of pilots, any of you who create a new user name should be able to have your current handle without issues.  Just be sure to use the following info:

Username:  Use your current handle without the "AKA_", e.g. "Relent"
Squad tag:  Use "AKA_"

Then your player name (e.g. for flying online) will concatenate the two strings above and will show properly as "AKA_xxxxx", e.g. "AKA_Relent".

IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 / Korea 1953 Campaign
« on: December 20, 2015, 01:16:46 pm »
S! all,

Here's some summary info regarding the Korea 1953 campaign.

- Will likely use the summer KTO map, but pending more tests today to see if you all want the summer or winter (lets decide today after the test mission is flown).

- The aircraft types, numbers and dispositions can be found here:

- Additional map details not found on the web-based road view map can be found here:

- Sample screen shot of smoke hints you'll see during the mission:

I'd l like to have a group flight tonight if possible so everyone can follow me around and I can show you the smoke hints on the waypoint paths.

General Discussion / Out of commission for a few days
« on: December 07, 2015, 11:58:41 am »
Out of commission in DCS and CoD for a few days.

I got a new EVGA GTX 970 card but now my PC reboots when flying those sims (also RoF) - no blue screen, or any crash logs written, just a black screen and reboot.  I'm able to fly IL2/46.  All things seem to point to the PSU as the likely candidate (spoke with EVGA support) so I've ordered a gold rated EVGA SuperNOVA G2 750 PSU.  Hopefully once I get that installed the restarts will go away and I'm back in business.

Rise of Flight / RoF sale going on

Just picked up a few mods for some of the aircraft I have, and picked up a few more aircraft.  Forgot how fun it can be with these string-bags once in a while :).

DCS Series Flight Sims / Combined Arms Tip
« on: October 27, 2015, 12:18:20 am »
Saw a post on the DCS CA forum regarding the one area that turns me off to CA the most - the ability of the AI to see through forests and buildings and fire/kill you without you being able to see them.

There was mention of a couple of properties in the Detection.lua script in the following location:

...\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\Scripts\AI

Near the top you'll see the following properties:

visual_detection = {
    terrain_LOS_test = true,
    Earth_curvature_LOS_test = true,
    objects_LOS_test = false,
    trees_LOS_test = false,

Change the last two shown above to "true" and it does seem to prevent them from seeing through the forests and buildings, at least with my testing (in 1.2, haven't tried 1.5).  More testing is needed, but so far it looks promising (I don't seem to get killed instantly when I'm driving through thick forests).
