DCS Series Flight Sims / To curve or not to curve.
« on: April 02, 2019, 09:08:59 pm »
Well I looked at the track from Saturday night and I snapped my F-14’s wings off.  Unfortunately because of how fast it happened Tacview did not record the G-force value, but it is clear in the Tacview that I pitched hard to avoid the missile for a split second.  I had pulled over 9G’s in the fight before pulling my wings off, so I am wondering if there is a cumulative effect.  I did the same thing on Sunday in BF (at least I think, there as so much desync in the server I am not 100% sure).  But the biggest eye opener was when I didn’t rip my wings off, but it is certainly worth mentioning so I am posting in here.   I was flying at low level in an F-14 in BF just North of Gudauta in that narrow plain between the ocean and the coastal range, I was flying at full military doing close to mach 1 and was in a steady left turn moving to a north heading (towards Sochi).  That Coastal range has a steep rise to it, and I was a bit too close so I increased the backpressure to the stick and my smooth 5-6G turn shot up to close to 10Gs in a split second.  It was so unexpected I thought I had been hit by something or I had a mechanical issue of some sort, but when I released my backpressure there were no issues.  I have curves both for pitch and roll, at the time the pitch curve was set to 15 (which is not a lot) and I have now increased it to 20.. but I am starting to wonder if a curve is a good idea at all.  For those of you who fly RC aircraft you will know this set up as exponent or exponential curves, I set it on my elevators for all my sailplanes.  In case someone does not know what it does or the real “catch” that I think is messing with the F-14, a curve or exponent curve softens the reaction of the stick around the center but it increases the sensitivity after mid travel range moving towards full travel. I think what is happening is that increase sensitivity after mid travel causes pitch angle (AOA) to increase too rapidly.  I am going to try some different setups on the elevator and report back.  I am going to try a shallow curve (less than 10), I am going to go back to the liner set up, and I will try a shallow reverse curve where there is a little more travel around the center but it will soften at the higher end of travel.  It is also possible this is an aerodynamic feature of the Tomcat, I have experienced something similar on sailplanes with full flying stabs, or it is a bug in the model, but I don’t think this is the case

DCS Series Flight Sims / First online Tomcat kills
« on: March 18, 2019, 10:22:58 am »
So I got my first online kills with the Tomcat last night.  I was flying on the BF Persian Gulf Map, flying the Tomcat against F-18’s and F-15’s and I downed 3 F-18’s all with the AIM-54.  I felt kind of guilty, since Jester is doing a lot of the work, just point the Tomcat at the enemy and wait for Jester to designate the target and let the Phoenix go.  I would say that I didn’t guide any of the shots for more than 10 seconds then broke away and let the Phoenix do its thing.   Unfortunately with how buggy the game is I have not been able to run my track and pull a Tacview to see if the Phoenix did a good job of running down these guys or if they didn’t maneuver.  One guy I am pretty sure was being defensive as it seem to take over a minute to hit him.

I also had a lot of Aim 120B’s shot at me and the Tomcats Speed was really apparent as I was able to reverse and burn away from the missiles each time (they were fired at range)

With this said, I think where the Tomcat will really shine is with a human RIO, Jester is slow on the callouts and with the stick partially blocking the view of the radar/tactical display up front having a Human work the RIO position I think will be significant improvement in lethality for the Tomcat.

All in all not bad, but I do have some reservations about the Tomcats Radar, something I will post in another thread.

DCS Series Flight Sims / Improvment but not a game changer
« on: March 02, 2019, 06:44:14 am »
The new IFF and Data link are a SA improvement for the F-18 but not a game changer.  I flew it a bit last night offline and online.  There is a pretty significant bug where ghost planes stay on the SA page giving a cluttered view.  Also as Wags mentioned you can have the SA page up on a DDI but it works better on the AMPCD: when I had the the SA page on the right DDI I frequently turned my radar off as the selected sensor because right on the sensor select switch on my favorite set up (radar on left DDI EW/RWR on the right DDI) locks a target while with the SA page on the right; I dont lock a target I inadvertently choose the SA page as the primary sensor.   With the SA page on the AMPCD it draws your attention down into the cockpit and not out of the canopy, when flying the F18 pilots are going to have to be disciplined and not spend too much time looking at the AMPCD.  Lastly the IFF info is not displayed on the Radar screen like all the other aircraft, which is honestly more of a problem than it sounds.  I am sure the correct model with have targets IFFed on the Radar display, but until then if you put the SA page on the AMPCD and are IFF from there just glace at it.

DCS Series Flight Sims / Blue Flag Cacucasus is running 60's/70's
« on: February 24, 2019, 10:07:33 am »
Blue Flag Caucasus is running the 60's/70's scenario.   It is F-5, F-86 A-10A vs Mig-21, Mig-15, Su-25 and Viggen plus choppers.  It is a lot of fun and not as intense as regular BF.  You can get in and hit stuff more often than not before you are intercepted, and helicopters are much more survivable as they are very hard to spot with the eye.   Also there are no Radar SAM sites.  I have been flying blue, but would be open to Red when the map flips.

It is good fun, hope to see you guys in there.

DCS Series Flight Sims / Always learning, F-18 and IFF
« on: December 05, 2018, 09:35:04 am »
Something I never knew, In the F-18 the IFF Staus is only accurate if the target is in the pitch ladder!  Also seems that over 30 miles it is hit or miss...

I never knew that that, CRAP!!    >:(

DCS Series Flight Sims / Sorry I have not been around.
« on: November 14, 2018, 06:03:26 am »
Sorry I have not been around guys, my schedule has been jammed from work.  Most of my flying has been late night.  I am going to be out of town the week of Thanksgiving as well so I will not be on at all during that time.

DCS Series Flight Sims / Blue Flag Persian Gulf Round Done.
« on: October 22, 2018, 12:03:11 pm »
The round did not last the weekend, the Blue hoard overran the Gulf States pretty quickly.  The map will go back into testing mode again.

I just want to let folks know who have not seen the other thread, when the next round of Blue Flag Persian Gulf starts choose the RED side.  The guys who admin Blue Flag have switched the colors so now NATO side is Red and Warsaw Pack side is Blue!

Folks are probably not able to switch once the round starts so if people dont read this...
