Burma '44 dogfight mission - aircraft not set 100%
« on: May 29, 2016, 04:49:13 pm »
Hey guys,

I put up a practice dogfight mission for Burma '44 - the aircraft set isn't 100%, but it's around 80% there.  I need to do some more research, plus testing of speeds, etc, as there are a lot of variants of some of them.

I wanted to use the south Burma map as the other one is too small for a campaign.  Also, I manually set up the airfields so they look fairly close to what they will be like in the campaign.  I've been working on the campaign, but it's not quite there yet.  Maybe I'll have more progress by next weekend.

I did some tests and made some slight tweaks to the plane set and have updated the dogfight mission so you can try it out.  I may need to add a couple types so the AI can have those available (so they don't reduce the human flyable), but for the human flyable ones I think it's close.   The main issues after this would probably be the numbers per airfield, etc.  Here's the latest version of the plane set:

USAAF/USN/RAF/FAA/RAAF:
  B-24J-100-CF
  B-25J-1NA
  BeaufighterMk21
  C-47
  F6F-5
  HurricaneMkIIc
  MosquitoFBMkVI
  P-38L-5-LO
  P-40M
  P-47D
  P-51B-NA
  SBD-5
  SeafireFMkIII
  SpitfireMkIXcM63
  TBF-1C

IJA/IJN:
  A6M2-21_Late
  A6M5
  A6M5c
  B6N2
  D4Y3
  G4M1_11
  Ki-21-II
  Ki-43-II-Kai
  Ki-43-III-Ko
  Ki-44-II-Ko
  Ki-45-Kai-Ko
  Ki-45-otsu
  Ki-61-I-Hei
  Ki-84-Ia
  L2D

There will also be the Catalina and Emily float planes, but this mission doesn't have any sea plane bases set up, so you'll have to wait until I can generate a test mission to practice with.

Initial thoughts are that there will be a USN and RN carrier, and one IJN carrier, plus one or two shipping convoys on each side.

noticed tonight while taxing at the south red base. The spawn point for me was by a hanger. Anytime while moving in a taildrager, the plane would ground loop every time I crossed a certain point in the terrain. Like hitting an invisible speed bump...every single time. no matter what speed or angle I would try and take. When ever i crossed this imaginary line it would dump the plane nose over.

Hmm, well this is the first time I've ever used this map, and I don't know of any fix for this map.  Maybe something we'll just need to be aware of - when I spawned and taxied on the south red airfield I didn't see this.  I did notice that even the runway was a little bumpy, not smooth like we're used to.   If it gets that bad I could remove it, but it's sort of in a good place...

8)The fields are all rough, but it seems that if you taxi slowly enough (below 20 mph) they do not nose up. Also, almost all of the Japanese planes seem to have impossible "Overheat" problems. Within 1 min of take off, and with throttle set below 45 %, I still got overheat. If you continue in overheat, engines catch fire.

The dogfight mission is set to October, so I'll change it to November, and see if it helps.  Don't forget to lower your pitch right away, 100%=overheat most likely... also you'll probably need to keep the cowling flaps/rads open all the way in this map until you are at high speed and can close them a bit after lowering the throttle.

S! All...
REL, thanks for all your set up work.  As I said, I will not be available except via email from the 6th June to about the 17th.
If any sides are chosen, just shoot me an email.
Also, I will need some instruction before things get going, or have a second that can run things before I return.
It looks like we won't be ready to run tests, etc, for another week, so this whole thing may be moot.

Sorry guys, when I was updating the campaign files on the AKA server, I logged out to try and free a lock on a file... this likely killed the dogfight server  :-[.

I was able to generate a few missions and put up a file from the campaign generator, so I updated the manual mission to the generated one.  This isn't what the campaign will look like when it starts, as I usually have to make some manual updates to spread things out properly.

In any case, feel free to try it out and see how things go - there are ships on the west side of the map, and the sea planes are now available.  You can check out the web map to see where the airfields are, etc.  Also, I added some light red circles around the airfields that have factories near them to spawn ground units.
