Italy 44 Campaign
« on: November 29, 2016, 02:57:41 pm »
S! All,

The campaign is mostly done, but I've run into a problem where the airfields are not selectable from inside the sim.  I've started looking into the problem, but the fix I tried didn't correct it so I need to do more research.  I will try to figure it out by Friday but if it persists the first practice mission may be delayed.

Good news - I finally figured out what the problem was with the airfields/carriers and not being able to select them for spawning.  I also tweaked a couple of items in the road network I needed to adjust.  I still need to make a couple small adjustments to the ground units (placement), but it's minor stuff.  I'm beat as it's been a long day, but I will try to wrap things up tomorrow at some point before our regular mission start time.

At worst case I should have a replacement practice dogfight mission, at best case I should have the campaign mission #1 ready to generate for a few dry run campaign missions.  See how it goes tomorrow.

Sorry for the late notice, but just finished work.  I think we can try a test mission if you guys want to try.  If you don't mind a slight delay, I'd like to give the commanders a little time to adjust the units/AI aircraft before we start.

Lets meet at the usual time, I'm enabling the commander authorization shortly - assuming RED/Human: Grey, Agile, BLUE/AI: Jer, Tai

Here are the supply planes for the two sides, with the corresponding amount of supply/fuel they are carrying:

  SupplyAC=C_47,10
  SupplyAC=B_25J1,5
  SupplyAC=PBY,5
  SupplyAC=JU_52_3MG4E,20
  SupplyAC=JU_52_3MG5E,20
  SupplyAC=ME_323,40
  SupplyAC=HE_111H2,10
  SupplyLoad='default'

I put up a new dogfight mission that was generated from the campaign generator.

Any AKA or friend that wants to fly in the new Italy 44 Campaign should show up tonight, if you can, as we will run a practice/familiarity game.
REgular Sunday start time: 1930 Eastern.

I updated the campaign files affecting enemy ground units spawning within an airfields' spawn circle and being treated as friendly to that airbase.   So, it should work better.   I also added the He-111H-12 to the axis side, with a few only at the supply base.  This carries the Fritz and Hs-293 and has a bomb sight you can slew forward.  The Fw-200 also carries the Hs-293 but it's very difficult/impossible to aim with it's bomb sight and you need to use the front gunner views.

I haven't figured out why the first mission on Sunday crashed approximately 80 minutes in, but I have some suspicions.  The following Java exception occurred dozens of times for approximately 80 seconds before the IL2 dedicated server just stopped/crashed:

[1:51:40 AM]   java.lang.NullPointerException

[1:51:40 AM]      at com.maddox.il2.game.DServer.main(DServer.java:436)

Seems like an AI aircraft issue, so I looked at the AI aircraft that were in the 3rd test mission and not in missions 1, 2 or 4.  The only two were the Bf109E-7 and the Ju-88A4.  I know we've used the Ju-88A4 before as AI bombers, so I'm wondering if there's a bug with the AI Bf109E-7 regarding it's AI logic, due to the exception thrown at:

com.maddox.il2.ai.VisCheck.checkIfOwnPlaneBlocksVisibility(VisCheck.java:665)

So, I'd like to run another test between now and Friday, running the same mission we ran on Sunday to see if it happens again.  If so, then it's probably that aircraft and I would need to simply replace it with another similar aircraft.

Other than that, I think we're good to go for Friday to start the campaign phase 1.

Hey Tai - sure, I need to regenerate the third mission from backups and ensure it uses the updated files.  Was planning on running a test tonight after work. I'll post here when I've started the test campaign mission.

Rel & Tai, just letting you know the last couple of evenings myself, Rage, TG, Ramstien, Duck and even Hangten have  been up on the practice server with the current campaign map. I expect that a lot may be up again tonite. So if you need additional testers, Im sure you may have additional volunteers.
The three most common expressions (or famous last words) in aviation are: "Why is it doing that?" "Where are we?" and "Oh Shit!"

Hope to see you then.

Thanks for helping with the test, I didn't see that exception again, so nothing was confirmed either way.  But, just in case it was the Bf109E-7 that was somehow causing the exception, I'll go ahead and replace it with the slightly older Bf109E-4/B for the campaign, which we can start Friday.

Also, I edited the map slightly putting light red filled circles on the map where the factories are:

Red:
AK-14.7 west of Pachino airfield
AL-17.3 south-east of Reggio Calabria airfield (1/2 sized factory)
AM-18.9 north-east of Vibo Valenza airfield (1/2 sized factory)

Blue:
AF-25.1 north of Pratica di Mare airfield
AC-26.6 (1/2 sized factory)
AH-24.7 east of Frosinone airfield (1/2 sized factory)

3 missions to go in the first phase, last mission Friday March 3rd.

I'll have to do some manual reconfiguration of campaign files to adjust the front lines, shuffle the ground units and adjust the airfield sides and aircraft inventories accordingly.  I expect we will need to take a break of a week or so before we resume with phase two.
