I tried a few more tonight.  Boltered twice.  Trapped twice.  It seems like when I'm set up right I'm actually landing a bit short (not hitting the ramp short, but short enough that the hook doesn't engage the wires) ... and other times when I think I have landed long I trap.  Definitely going to have to watch the videos more to get a better sight picture of what it should look like.

FYI there evidently is supposed to be a LSO camera view (Ctrl-F9) so you can judge other peoples landings.  I saw one video tonight of someone using that view.  But I can't get it to work.

Also ... I think they may have broken weather with the last patch.  I can't get it to rain now.

I finally got a handle on setting up countermeasure programs.  I also tried to test the RWR.  I would NOT rely on it right now.  It seems spotty at best.

Thanks Top.

Hey Top - another carrier landing video that I found excellently done is by RedKite (DCS F/A-18c Basic Carrier Operations tutorial):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMJ1Y57qtjI

I highly recommend this, it really covered all of the various scenarios, and frequent pitfalls that many of us (me included) run into.

Things I have learned thus far from CASE 1 landings:

When on the downwind, use the E-bracket.  The AoA indicator is good for initial setup but it's almost too vague for carrier recovery.  The E bracket is a better judge of AoA, AND it is right on your HUD so you don't have to take your eyes off the HUD to look at the AoA indicator.

If you are on your E-bracket then you are on a good AoA and speed.  Once you are at this point you are NOT concerned about speed as much as your speed delta (how much your speed is changing).  If you are on your E-bracket and you are accelerating then throttle back to halt the acceleration.  Likewise if you are slowing, punch it up a little to stop it.  Note that you will be doing some significant turns for the latter half of the recovery so you will need to throttle up to avoid sinking hard, and will need to remember to throttle back coming out of the turn so you don't balloon.

Do not get too slow.  If your TVV starts sliding below your E-bracket you are going to start dropping like a brick.  If this happens just as you are rolling out then punch it up and get back on the E-bracket and get your altitude back up if you dropped too low (which is likely).  If you are inside the ball call when that happens you probably need to throttle up and do a missed approach.

When you roll out you will not see the ball unless you are almost exactly on the centerline so you need to work on not under or overshooting the final turn and ensure you are lined up.  The most common thing I am seeing (including in my own approaches) is undershooting the turn and coming in left of the centerline.

When on final, put your TVV on the crotch of the ship (the right corner at the far end of the runway) in order to combat drifting due to ship movement.

When you are nearing touchdown, do NOT put the TVV on the wires.  You will end up hitting the deck too short.  Aim the TVV around half way between the wires and the end of the runway.

Do not exceed -750 FPM, and most importantly DO NOT FLARE.

I have made a cheat sheet diagram for CASE 1.  Find it here:  https://www.dropbox.com/s/xx9sej1gvp4v385/CASE1.jpg?dl=0

I had an issue like this last night, it was really strange.  I am trying to practice my case 1’s every day so last night I pull up the instant action mission case 1 on the Caucasus map and missed the trap 4 times in a row.  The first time I did a clean pattern all the way in hit the deck and bolted..  It was so clean that I thought I had left the hook up but then I hit the F2 view it was down.   I flew the second pattern by the book again but came in a little high, I easily adjusted my altitude with my throttle like you are supposed to, hit the deck and bolted..   WTF?  That was one of the few times where I didn’t muscle the plane in by correcting my height by using the elevators but by using the throttle like you are supposed to and I bolted.  I went straight into the downwind from the second bolt and made what I would say was a textbook approach (according to the E-Bracket) only to Bolt again!  At this point I was pissed, went straight to the downwind again and made another clean approach, slightly high but corrected with the throttle and Bolted again………….  WTF?

What is making me scratch my head is that I feel confident that I can muscle the plane onto the deck by not worrying about the AOA and the ball that much, just eyeballing it and using the elevators to correct height and get a trap 90% of the time where last night I really worked the AOA, flew the ball and used the throttle to correct height and was 0 for 4.  I am going to look at the track tonight to see if I can spot the problem (after the 4th miss I went to bed).  The only thing I can think of is that as I was using the throttle to correct glideslope I was off the power as I hit the deck and maybe that causes an issue?

and most importantly DO NOT FLARE.

Actually I am wondering if this might have been my problem, I was so concentrated on the E-Bracket and AOA as I was correcting my glideslope that I was pulling back too much just before hitting the deck, not flaring per say, just trying to keep the AOA perfect where at that point I should be concentrating more on the TVV and the Ball..
