NVidia / AMD ?
« on: July 18, 2018, 01:53:53 pm »
I just got a NVidia card from a coworker, a bit higher end than my current AMD card.

Who uses NVidia, and do you like it ?

Honestly, the only thing I care about is able to see enemy aircraft better - so curious who sees them and who doesn't . :)

I concur with Ramstein.
NVidia is the better card for games IMO, and a good choice.
There are some settings you might want to consider using in the NVidia control panel,
which should be available after you update the drivers for the card.
You did not mention the NVidia card you are now using. Is it a 600, 700, 900 or 1000 series card?
Mine is the 970 GTX card and I've had the 780, 680 480 series before getting my current card.
I'd love a 1080 but cannot afford it, so the 970 will suit me just fine for some time into the future.

Don't hesitate to ask for assistance setting up the card for the games.

Nividia all the way...I tried AMD once and took it back same day. I was lucky and got a 1070 before the prices went sky high thanks to the crypto craze.

The 480, a pretty good card, is a bit dated now, but able to do IL-2 Sturmovik (very good), COD (good) and maybe BOS (stretched) but I don't think you'll have great framerates with DCS series.
Be sure that your IL-2 Sturmovik is set to use OpenGL instead of direct X in the settings.

I have a Sapphire 7950, maybe I'll look at the 970 GTX or a 1060 GTX

I have the 970 now and happy with it.
Don't know how the 1060 compares, but should be better as it has more video ram, I believe.

Yes prices are getting better...I got my MSI GTX 1070 gaming Z in 2016 for 430. The same card is now anywhere from 509 to 700 even higher. Depends on who is selling it... I've been more than happy with it. Runs everything from high to max on a 4k monitor great...Really boils down to what game I'm playing.  I get consistent 60 fps in BOS on max settings..And still have a very hard time making out contacts..That the biggest downfall for me with BOS. I would go with a 900 series or a 1060 over the 480 like Gos  said. I had a 480 at one time..If I remember correctly the card runs on the hot side and will slow down. The 1080 cards are outrageous, damn sham really...All over the crypto currency craze... All those people bought anywhere from 4 to 16 cards at a time to mine crypto...

If you are patient and do want a better card, I bet you can find one fairly cheap from a crypto miner trying to recover from a loss...Cause crypto is not doing jack shit right now...Lol poor guys..But they will probably try and get what they payed for them...

I have been in IT since 1989 and had some bad experiences with AMD. The Catalyst software in the early days was awful. My last several cards I have had have been NVidia and currently have a 1070 GTX which came while my latest rig. The previous rig was one I built and it had a 1060 GTX. Honestly the 1060 and 1070 can / could both run DCS at high levels. I gave the old rig to a friends son and he is gushing. The 1060 I had cost went up $150 in two years since I bought it. I could have sold it I guess but it was not worth the broad smile on a 17 year old's face.  :)

I decided to get the NVIDIA - GeForce GTX 1070 Founders Edition 8GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 Graphics Card card.   I think for the extra $100 over the 1060 it will last longer and handle everything
