Initial DCS download
« on: November 15, 2018, 06:20:37 pm »
S!
I have the standard DCS DL, but someone mentioned a beta version or such.

Should I get that Beta version and uninstall the original?

Thanks,

Agile

We fly the Beta,, if you have the room, have both, if only 1 use Beta.. plus a few of us use the SkateZilla utility for DCS:

Hey Agile,

Hope I'm not too late, but wanted to add another option.  You can do as you say, uninstall DCS and then install DCS openbeta.  Or you can do as Ram says, and use a 3rd party tool such as the SkateZilla utility for DCS.

Or, if you are comfortable with creating and editing shortcuts, you can try a third option:   Create a shortcut to update your DCS to DCS.openbeta.

First some background:

If you look at your DCS shortcut, properties, the "Target:" box probably looks something like this (maybe different drive letter):

"D:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\bin\DCS_updater.exe"

This will start DCS, like normal.

What you can now do is make a copy of the shortcut - and in the General tab change the name at the top to: " DCS World - update to Open Beta"
Then change the "Target:" box to the following (note the beginning and ending double-quotes):

"D:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\bin\DCS_updater.exe" update @openbeta

This will change the DCS version you have from DCS "release" version, to DCS "open beta" version.  It will download only those files needed that you don't already have, much faster.

You can now still use the same original DCS shortcut you already use, but now instead of being DCS (release), you will be at DCS open beta.

One more thing - if you wanted to go back to DCS (release), you can create another short cut (call it "DCS World - update to Release"), by changing the "Target:" box to the following:

"D:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World\bin\DCS_updater.exe" update @release

Hope that helps Agile - welcome to DCS World! :).
