TV vs Monitor
« on: June 27, 2019, 02:02:56 pm »
S! All,

I'm tired of my 24" monitor.  Good at 1080p, etc., but small screen.

I have space for up to a 32" set.

Any recommendations for under $300.?

Thanks,

Agile

my opinion is stay at 1080p Ive had them all, from 1080p to 4K. 4k will give you the best quality but you will lose FPS and the ability to spot contacts easy. 2K is the in between and that's where im at now if not playing in VR. I dont have any recommendations that fit your budget, as the one I play on now was quite pricey. I think any TV in that range will be in 1080p.

I have had a 32 Samsung in bedroom for a while and picture is great. Keep in mind a TV and monitor are different though are nowadays closer to same specs. I personally believe a true monitor will perform better than a TV. Maybe I am old school. Check on refresh rates, etc.

I believe, maybe I'm wrong, that both TV's and monitors have set refresh rates for different resolutions and as the resolution gets higher, the refresh rates get slower.
For example, if I run my TV at a resolution of 1080, I can get 60Hz but if I bump it up top 4K, which it is capable of, the refresh rates drop to 30Hz.
Some monitors may get up to 80Hz, but I doubt you'd be able to notice the difference in a game between the 60 and 80.

Good luck!

Gos

there is a lot more to the difference that need to be considered. otherwise we would just all buy TVs right? i am not going to rehash these suggestions and let someone with internet presence to explain. after all there is only truth on the internet. technology has a patina of truth  O0

https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-a-computer-monitor-and-a-TV-television

i have been in IT since pretty much ground zero and have seen a lot of changes. like i had said the difference between the two types has narrowed since 1987 when i started. i am only preaching caution. especially with gaming you will, IMHO, notice. and after all you are spending the money and have to deal with the choice.

Excellent reference, SilverDevil. Thank you for supplying that.
I definitely defer to your expertise and will respectfully bow out of this matter now.
Sure wish I could afford a 37" computer monitor though!

S!~
Like others - after having numerous monitors and TV's  - I am using 32 in TV 1080p -refresh 120hz- motion rate. That said- you have to set the monitor to gaming- and it runs well w/o tearing on a Intel 7700 4.2 w. a 1080 8g card. Best air-air spotting- best quick zoom in - and seems to run reliably.
Its a given that gaming monitors are the best- but the high res seems to be no benefit when flying around seeing a whole lot of nothing until they're up close and dangerous.
I have a Dell 24 in gaming monitor running @ 2k w. a 144hz refresh. It is also imo inferior for Cliffs of Dover sim flying- and find again the $200 - $179 smart tv's a hell of a  value. That darn Dell was $600. ouch.
If you buy a 32in 120 motion rate at 1080p- if not happy- box it back up and drive back to Best Buy and say it didn't fit. Kind of true! Good Luck Agil- blast away.

blasto has a good point i had forgotten. when you stay at 1080 on a large screen your image will be bigger. meaning the plane you are spotting on a 24" running at 1920x1080 will be smaller than on a 32" running 1920x1080. almost 33% larger. but its pixel density is lower. so in theory less crisp.
