I like using two sets of speakers. I use the computer speakers for TS. I use my TV speakers (lcd screen has speakers) for the flight sim. I use the microphone on my headset for talking.

Turning the volume down in the game is said to cause certain game sounds to disappear completely but you can leave the game settings at full volume and adjust the relative levels of TS & Clod using the windows volume mixer. I have TS on full volume but the sounds from CLOD are reduced to about 60% which I find allows me to hear all CLOD sounds while still hearing TS over the top.

I have tried the plugin that cuts the game sound when someone talks but I switched it off again 30 minutes later because I hated the way the sounds went muffled every time someone coughed or a dog barked while someone was using voice activation. Many people love it though so make up your own mind.

very good info!
