Want a laugh ...check out my homemade rudder pedals :)
« on: March 01, 2015, 08:26:08 am »
Started flying again and had no rudder pedals and no desire to spent $100 to $180 for a set.... So I challenged myself to build a set with just stuff laying around my garage and basement ...scraps and such..I wanted it as simple as possible...I had an old Logitech 3D pro laying around as well ...After looking at a lot of other designs online I came up with this ...complete with toe brakes  ..best part it was free...Tried it out last night and it works surprisingly well WW 1 style  ;) lol

Nice Sully, to be honest it is not a bad idea.  Is the stick a twisty stick?

It does have a twist rudder  ....but with the pedals I wanted a little longer throw for more precision....I got that with the X/Y axis...

Damn smart!! If I didn't know better, I'd say you were an old Moto Guzzi rider.

Good job Sully- looks killer. I was hoping for a more adult Lincoln Logs look. But I guess this is good too...try an Erector Set motif and you'll be even more cutting edge. I can send you some baby seal oil that works wonders for your hinges on that thing...and can be used to work out the knots in your feet from that two x four Japanese rudder thing you kick around- very Eur_Asian. Torture ones self while flying- earn resilience.  Yamamoto ?   ;)   Very impressive- very creative - that's  cool to see.    8)  Hope to see you in Cliffs.

That lil' car? No idea- I copied the pix from Craigs List- thinking it was something to steal ideas from when I build a pole barn / workshop and start making small - one person driving machines. When? prob. never. But I did just p/u a 06' 750Li 4.8 liter V8
w/ 367hp- 0-60 in 5.8sec. Complete opposite of that cool little car. Big- safe- battle-cruiser.
Flying in Cliffs has been a bit scattered. Ive been working 6-7 days a week- bought the fam. business- and now I might be able to take Sun. off. That said - I think Tues- Wed. Thur. and Fri. 's are still good nights to get together in ATAG. Im going to do some flying tonight in fact. If you see me in there- hail me- and we can try to wing. See you soon.

Wow...simply wow  Do they work sufficiently well?  They remind me of something form World War I! ;)

My dad built me a pair made some from custom aluminum fabrication and they worked okay though they no longer work with the USB devices.  They did not center sometimes perfectly well...does your unit center sufficiently.  I still have them just to appreciate the construction quality.

I agree about the cost.  I use a pair of car pedals currently which work very, very well.  But I had to do a difficult software installation with them (i.e., virtual drivers and controlling software) and I switched out a spring in the brake to make the resistance equal in the gas and brake pedals.  One advantage is that I have two different axes associated with the pedals so I can also map braking functionality onto the pedals in addition to the yaw axis.

So far so good Limbo ...the stick has enough spring tension to pull the foot stick back to center all the time ..... I lubed the block the foot stick pivots on, so it's smooth.... and just hand tighten the nut ....so far they work as good as the CH pedals I used to have ...only time will tell if they hold up ....S~
